Our current recruit class, made up of five members get valuable hands-on experience during live fire training this week.

On Tuesday evening, our recruits participated in fire behavior class, observing a controlled fire inside one of the rooms in our training facility to see its four stages: incipient, growth, fully developed, and decay. Using a thermal imaging camera, recruits could see how hot conditions can become, comparing temperatures near the ceiling to those closer to the floor. This provided a firsthand look at the dramatic temperature differences inside a burning room and reinforced why staying low can make a critical difference in a fire environment. Throughout the exercise, experienced fire instructors supervised the recruits and maintained a charged hose line inside the room for safety.

Today, our recruits returned for their second live fire class, continuing to build on the knowledge and skills they learned earlier in the week.

We’re proud of the hard work and dedication these six recruits are putting into their training as they work toward becoming firefighters!

Yesterday, we shared a look at our members participating in live fire training. Today, we’re highlighting our Junior Firefighters, who were also on scene supporting operations from outside the building.

As pictured, Jr. Firefighter Connor Hallinan (left) and Jr Firefighter Chris Abiad (right) help advance the hose line outside the structure, ensuring the firefighter operating the nozzle inside the building have enough hose to reach the seat of the fire. These important support tasks help keep interior firefighting operations moving while giving our younger members valuable, hands-on experience.

Our Junior Firefighters participate in approved activities and assist with designated tasks on the fireground under close supervision, allowing them to learn alongside our experienced members while remaining away from the most hazardous areas of the operation.

At the beginning of this year, we transitioned from our Explorer program to a Junior Firefighter Program to create a more direct path for young members ages 14–17 to develop their skills and eventually transition to full membership when they turn 18.

Several of our firefighters participated in live fire training during this week’s drill, putting their skills to the test in a controlled environment.

Live fire training is an annual OSHA requirement for our interior firefighters (members who enter environments that are immediately dangerous to life and health) and provides an essential opportunity to practice critical firefighting skills, including:

-Establishing a reliable water supply
-Searching for trapped victims
-Locating and extinguishing the fire
-Stretching hose lines off the apparatus and advancing into and through a building
-Setting up ground ladders around the building

We’re fortunate to have our own training facility right in our backyard, allowing our members to regularly sharpen their skills while keeping our firefighters and apparatus within our district, ready to respond when our community needs us.

Training today helps us be ready for tomorrow.

A Look Inside Live Fire Training:

Yesterday, five members of the Spencerport Rotary had the opportunity to see our firefighters in action last night during live fire training!

Last year, Spencerport Rotary secured grant funding that allowed us to purchase two Seek Thermal FirePRO 300 thermal imaging cameras. These TICs play an important role in both firefighter safety and training.

Our fire instructors use the TICs to monitor conditions inside our burn building, helping them track heat, changing conditions, and see exactly where our firefighters are during live fire exercises. We also carry similar TICs on our apparatus, where they help firefighters locate fire and search for victims through thick smoke when visibility is limited.

Beyond improving safety, the TICs can capture photos and record video, giving our members a valuable opportunity to review their performance and learn from each training session.

We are grateful to Spencerport Rotary for their support and investment in our firefighters. Their generosity helps us train more safely, improve our skills, and better serve our community.

Thank you, Spencerport Rotary, for helping us make a difference!

THANK YOU FOR JOINING US AT OUR ANNUAL OPEN HOUSE!

We couldn’t have asked for a better day! The rain held off until after the event, giving us the perfect opportunity to welcome our community to our firehouse for a day of fun, learning, and fire safety.

Our guests enjoyed fresh cider and donuts, ice cream, and a live demonstration simulating the rescue of a victim trapped inside a vehicle. It was a great opportunity to meet our volunteer firefighters, learn more about our equipment, and see firsthand what we do to protect our community.

A huge thank you to everyone who came out to support us today and to our partners who helped make this event a success!
