Community invited to Station 1 on September 11 as firefighters honor those lost on 9/11 and those still battling its effects 25 years later
SPENCERPORT, N.Y. — Twenty-five years after the attacks of September 11, 2001, the Spencerport Fire District will come together with the community to remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost, honor the first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice, and recognize those who continue to battle illnesses and cancers related to their exposure at Ground Zero.
The Spencerport Fire District will host a 9/11 remembrance ceremony at 10 a.m. on Friday, September 11, at Station 1, 175 Lyell Avenue. Members of the community are invited to attend and join Spencerport firefighters as we pause to remember the events of that day and the lasting impact they continue to have 25 years later.
The ceremony will also be part of a tribute organized by Spencerport Fire District called the “9/11 Steel Tour.”
A Tour Connected by World Trade Center Steel
Spencerport FD is fortunate to have a piece of World Trade Center steel displayed outside Station 1 as part of our living memorial. On September 11, 2026, Spencerport firefighters will travel throughout Monroe County, visiting several local fire departments and memorials that also preserve pieces of World Trade Center steel.
At each stop, firefighters will pause for an honor tribute, creating a day of remembrance, reflection, and brotherhood throughout the local fire service.
The tentative schedule for the Steel Tour includes:
- 8:30 a.m. — Brockport Memorial Opening Ceremony
- 10:00 a.m. — 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at Spencerport Fire District Station 1, 175 Lyell Avenue
- 10:30 a.m. — Honor Tribute at Ridge Road Fire District Headquarters
- 11:00 a.m. — Honor Tribute at Gates Fire District Station 1
- 11:30 a.m. — Honor Tribute at Chili Fire District Station 1
- 12:00 p.m. — Public Safety Training Facility, Monroe County
- 1:00 p.m. — Highland Park 9/11 Responder Memorial
The Story Behind Spencerport FD’s Steel Piece
As part of the 10 a.m. ceremony, Spencerport firefighters will share the story of how the District acquired its piece of World Trade Center steel and how it ultimately made its way to Spencerport.
The piece now stands outside Station 1 as a permanent reminder of the sacrifices made on September 11 and the impact that day had on the fire service and communities across the country.
25 Years Later
While September 11 is remembered for the lives lost that day, the effects of the attacks did not end when the fires were extinguished or the rescue and recovery operations concluded.
Thousands of first responders and others exposed to the conditions at Ground Zero have faced serious health consequences in the years since, including 9/11-related cancers and other illnesses. Many continue to fight those battles today, while others have sadly lost their lives years after the attacks.
The 25th anniversary provides an opportunity to remember all of them, those we lost on September 11, those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the days and months that followed, and those who continue to live with the consequences of their service.
Join Us
The Spencerport Fire District invites members of the community to join us for the 10 a.m. remembrance ceremony on Friday, September 11, at Station 1, 175 Lyell Avenue.

Twenty-five years later, we remember. We honor. We stand together.
