Become A Volunteer Firefighter

About Our Volunteer Program

For nearly 135 years, the Spencerport Volunteer Firemen’s Association (SVFA) has proudly served the communities of the Village of Spencerport, the Town of Ogden, and the southern portion of the Town of Parma. Our department is made up entirely of dedicated volunteers who share one common goal: protecting our neighbors and helping people when they need it most.

We are always looking for motivated men and women who want to serve their community, learn valuable life-saving skills, and be part of something bigger than themselves. Whether you’re looking for a way to give back, challenge yourself, or join a tight-knit team, the SVFA offers an opportunity to make a real difference. No previous fire service experience is required to join.

Our firefighters respond to a wide range of emergency calls throughout the year including:

  • Structure Fires in homes, apartments, and commercial buildings

  • Motor Vehicle Accidents requiring rescue, traffic control, and hazard mitigation

  • Technical Rescues including vehicle extrications, confined space rescues, structure collapses, and other complex incidents

  • Hazardous Materials such as fuel spills, chemical leaks, or unknown substances

  • Automatic Alarms including smoke, carbon monoxide, and water flow alarms residential homes and commercial buildings

  • Emergency Medical Services to assist residents in need

  • Vehicle and outdoor fires to prevent fire from spreading to nearby structures.

  • Storm-Related Emergencies including downed wires, and hazardous conditions

  • Community Service Calls where neighbors simply need help

Our members train and respond together, building skills, confidence, and lifelong friendships along the way.

Membership Opportunities

There are several ways to get involved:

Full Membership (Age 18 and up)
Full members respond to emergency incidents and participate in training, department activities, and community events.

Restricted Membership (Age 17)
Restricted members assist with exterior operations at emergency scenes and begin learning the skills needed to become full firefighters when he or she turns 18.

Junior Firefighter Program (Ages 14–17)
Younger members interested in the fire service can begin as a Junior Firefighter which introduces teens to the fire service through training, mentorship, and hands-on learning in a safe environment. Click here to learn more about our Junior Firefighter program.

Fire Police
Fire Police members play a critical role in supporting emergency operations. They assist with traffic control, scene safety, and crowd management at emergency incidents such as fires, motor vehicle accidents, and other emergencies. Their work helps protect firefighters, emergency personnel, and the public while allowing crews to operate safely and efficiently.

Responding to Calls

Once members complete their probationary period, they can choose between two ways to meet their response requirements:

Standard Response Program
Members respond to a required percentage of calls each month as they are available.

On-Duty Program
Members commit to scheduled duty shifts at the firehouse each month. During these shifts, firefighters respond to all emergency incidents and assist within their training level. This option provides more structure and ensures strong staffing during those hours. This is a great option if you do not live near one of our three firehouses, or live outside the Fire District.

Training & Development

No experience is required to join. The Monroe County Fire Bureau provides professional fire academy training, which you would attend at no cost to you once in-house training is completed. Members receive instruction in firefighting, rescue operations, safety, and many other valuable skills. Some New York State fire courses are stipend, including Basic Exterior Firefighting Operations and Interior Firefighting Operations. Both of these classes are stipend, where you will earn up to $2,000 for completing both BEFO and IFO.

Beyond emergency response training, being part of the SVFA also means becoming part of a proud tradition of teamwork, community service, and personal growth.

If you’re looking for a way to challenge yourself, serve your community, learn lifesaving skills, and be part of a team that people rely on when seconds matter, we encourage you to join us.
